Question about media quality...from a psychological POV...

    by gear-wise » Fri Feb 27, 2015 2:03 am

OK, so I'm putting this out there because my wife and I have been working on our campaign media (video, pictures, graphics) and we got into a bit of a tiff...I noticed that the quality of campaign media ranges from "down and dirty" to high professional levels. So naturally i wanted to make ours as nice as possible! I understand that its important to convey quality through their media in hopes that it will reflect on their product/work ethic/ and probability that the project (if funded) will follow through...but...

...has anyone ever seen a really high quality video, or lots of fancy graphics and wondered why these people need money when they can spend so much on visual production costs?

My wife and I saw a few and thought this, then ended up in an argument later on because i was pushing for professional quality and she was tired

Anyways, her point was this: "will people think that we dont really need the money because our 'stuff' looks too professional?"

Personally, I think not. But i wanted to ask you all for your thoughts...

    1. Have you ever been "turned off" on a campaign because it was too fancy?
    2. (in cases of small start ups) Does knowing that the media was made by the actual person and not a paid professional do anything for you as a potential backer?

Here is a teaser trailer for my campaign that my wife and I made over the weekend... (the official video will include much more information)

Please let me know if you think its obvious that it was home made, my feelings won't be hurt, id just like to know.

    Thanks much!

"has anyone ever seen a really high quality video, or lots of fancy graphics and wondered why these people need money when they can spend so much on visual production costs" - Yes I think Kickstarter has gotten too commercial recently with the videos.

I would balance the professionalism with also some amateur qualities like including yourself in the video, doing outtakes, or adding some humor.

I think it's okay for you to invest in the media if you are the ones putting in your own money (make that clear) and really care about the project. At the end of the day, passion is what matters.

Did an interview with these college students who had a very professional video, but also resonated. Recommend checking out them. See: http://www.crowdcrux.com/these-recent-c ... nc-router/

Thanks for the feedback. I was beginning to wonder if anyone was going to reply! lol.

I totally agree, our video and media clearly shows our passion and willingness to throw ourselves into this project, and we are excited about getting started.

But my question wasnt really about the money, we arent paying for anything or anyone, but its interesting to know that you think I should mention that we didnt hire some marketing firm or production company to help us.

Dont know if you checked out the clip i posted, but thats just the opening segment, overall the video is about 3.5 minutes long and includes me talking about it interview style along with pictures and video clips to highlight our story. I hope the viewers will appreciate the story aspect as much as the project!

I looked at the video you posted and read the article. I can see why it was so successful, I want one!

    Thanks again for the insight!
