MackyMack wrote:I just launched my first (and probably only) Kickstarter campaign and there hasn't exactly been an enthusiastic barrage of pledges from my friends and family. My dad plans on making a large pledge, but he is reluctant to do so early in the game when it will be so noticeable. He thinks because the pledge will obviously be from a family member, it will look bad and reflect poorly on my project.

I think it's perfectly respectable to accept pledges from family members (c'mon, who else is going to give me money?), and it might even instill confidence in potential backers if they think my project might actually be funded.

What do all you experienced Kickstarters think? Should my father pledge early or wait until later?

    Thanks for your advice!

    Hey,
I checked out your project page and it actually seems like a very good idea. We host backpackers and travelers all the time on our land through sites like workaway and helpx and there is definitely an audience for a book on traveling. I agree with @Charles that the Kickstarter video is not as captivating as your page itself or your facebook but I do believe in your project. I will try to share with others. But do not be discouraged and don´t pay attention to any negative feedback with regards to your dad pledging. There is nothing wrong with your parents supporting you, at any juncture in your life, and it is commendable that he is choosing to do so. March forward with your head held high and let your dad support his daughter. You both must have a wonderful relationship. Best of luck with your Kickstarter! =]

    McKenzie,

The link in your forum signature links to your project's Comments page, and not to the front page of your Kickstarter project page, itself.

@MackyMack I agree with what others have said. Yes, I think it's perfectly normal to have your Dad pledge. I've known people who also line up angel investors to just pledge to their Kickstarter to give it a boost.

Your Dad is one of your supporters and most projects start with an individual's social network first.

Your father's pledge would be carrying the momentum. Not at all cheating.

    Heck naw!

    That's what dad's for!

However, I can see how on a personal level it might feel a little embarrassing, especially if you're running a small campaign and your parents make up a large chunk of the pledges. It makes you feel a little less 'legit'

    Good luck!

My two cents you seem to have a really cool project and some cool perks.

However, what marketing strategies are you using?

    Posting on this forum. Check.

    But what else????

    Two suggestions:
http://pubslush.com (crowdfunding for authors) FYI it's the next platform that I will try.

    And also contact

    I agree with that quote.
I have done some cheating myself that I'd like to undo and your dad support is not cheating ;)

    Difficult here too...
I've outreached everyone I know and my project backers stopped to growing :(

let's help each other out...... (I don't think project owners pledging each other's project is "cheating" is it?)
back me $1 and I'll back you $1!

Wouldn't it be best to have him pledge early just to look good to others who are willing to do so.
