Yeah, 4k of 10k out of your own pocket is too much and would defeat the purpose of the crowd funding.
But I'm all for it if there's only a small percentage left to be funded and you're running out of time, such as in SoftTempest's story. That's tough if Kickstarter finds it unethical. They should provide a flexible funding option like what Indiegogo has, where you can choose to keep what you earned without reaching funding goal, instead of the all-or-nothing model. There've been so many projects in the past that were close to their funding goal, but didn't make it due to a small percentage unfunded. Kickstarter must lose a lot of revenue with projects like these
