I suggest building a community on Twitter, Facebook, etc months before you even start crowdfunding. And make sure you have a newsletter sign up link on your website (even if don't send out a newsletter until you launch).
Even if not SM savvy, do your research, see the types of things people who are in similar field to yours are posting on Twitter and Facebook. It's about what's trending, what's hot, what's personable, funny, etc. People want to see you have a personality, know your story rather than be constantly reminded you're selling something. And good-quality promo pics go a long way.
Also, have a solid press kit and pitch to relevant press (again do your research of what press is relevant to your type of project). DON'T pitch to press before your campaign is LIVE--they want live links and products that are currently available.
