Campaign Funding - Lowest Amount? How low is too low?

    by JohnyQuest » Tue Mar 19, 2019 1:58 pm

I am going to launch a KS project soon, and I am doing it primarily for marketing purposes to raise considerable awareness, and also to build a tribe of fans. I have 2,100 of our product on order, but is going through certification testing first. After certification testing is successful, the products will be finalized, etched with certification, and then shipped to us by June.

I also think crowdfunding is a smarter approach to launch a product as I can have unlimited sales, vs being able to sell only what I have in inventory (it takes about 60 days to produce my product and then a month for it to arrive, so if I had sales more than what I have in inventory, I could not fill the orders for more than 3 months, which people will not accept, But they will for crowdfunding).

So since I don't need the funding to fund orders, I can set the goal to whatever I want it to be . My PRIVATE goal is to exceed $1m, but my public goal could be:

      $50k
      $30k
      $20k
      $15k
      $10k, etc.

I understand the goal of getting funded on day one so you can say funded in 24 hours, like Lowkey's post. I have not yet started pre-campaign email capture, although I do have about 1,000 emails already. We will do some Facebook ads with A/B split testing to find out what performs best, and I hope to raise 10k-15k emails before we launch.

My product MSRP is $379, and we will offer a 40% discount, down to $229 for Super Early Bird.

Would greatly appreciate everyone's thoughts on what would be the right dollar amount to set and why.

I'd also like to know the answer to this question.

If I had a failed campaign because my initial goal was too high, are my chances of success lowered if I want to try again?

in@JonnyQuest, Curious what you decided and how it went?

We have a much smaller internal goal (10K), with part of this campaign being viewed as a prelaunch for a second product which will need to reach 10K minimum and ideally 100K. We are currently collecting emails and information (see https://board-labs.com/survey-a) for our first product to launch pretty soon. We could literally make our initial goal $100 and be funded early and would be fine with it since we already have invested in the initial production run (<1000) and so for us scaling won't get us much except better packaging and better margins.

Has anyone done a $1 serious campaign? (I did see https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ri ... ickstarter)

This is a very tricky decision. One must make the decision according to the product and the market. Time is also a very big factor here. A thorough analysis is highly recommended before going to launch a campaign. A high pledge might look cool but will it serve the need you seek? Answering the question will get you the right amount to pledge.

Not sure. I set my goal very low in hopes that it would be funded quickly, but my partner suggests that might be setting us up for failure. The more time goes by with my project at only 40% funded, the more I'm convinced he's right.
