    Business licence?

    by thematrixiam » Thu Jan 23, 2014 4:42 am

Hey, I'm new here to the whole kick starter thing and I am doing some research before I start up my project.

My question is, do I need a business licence? if I'm selling these rewards to fund my project don't I need to some how cover my butt from the government? I'm in Canada by the way.

    Thanks,

    Thematrixiam

I'm not all that familiar with business laws in Canada. I know that in the US you can use the websites without an LLC. On taxes see: http://mashable.com/2013/07/30/kickstar ... wdfunding/

I think you would probably be counted as a sole trader or the Canadian equivalent.

Hey Thematrixiam, welcome to the world of Kickstarter! It's awesome that you're doing your research before diving in.

As for your question about needing a business license, it depends on a few factors. In Canada, whether or not you need a business license may vary based on the province you’re in, the type of product you're offering, and how you plan to operate. Generally, if you're raising funds through Kickstarter and offering rewards, you're likely considered to be running a business. It would be smart to check with local authorities or a legal advisor to ensure you’re compliant with any tax or regulatory requirements. You'll probably also want to keep track of your earnings and expenses, as the government may consider your Kickstarter revenue taxable income.

Since you’re getting into the business mindset, another thing to consider is how you’ll manage your project’s goals and track progress once it's live. You might want to check out OKR App. It’s a great tool to help you align your objectives and track your project’s progress, especially when you start scaling things up.

    Good luck with your project!

    Hey Thematrixiam,

Welcome to the community! Whether you need a business license for your Kickstarter project really depends on your province or municipality in Canada. If you're selling products or services, you might need to register your business. It’s also wise to consider any tax obligations, like collecting sales tax. I recommend checking with your local business registry or a legal advisor to make sure you're compliant. Good luck with your project, and feel free to ask if you have more questions!
