I have found through my one and only kickstarter, that people are focused on the rewards. Helping you is a secondary goal unless they know you. I think the best things you can do are: 1. offer rewards people want; 2. build a deep following over time.
Why not offer some tangible rewards? This is an opportunity to pre-sell baked goods. How much for a loaf of bread? How about a pie or cake? This would only get local pledges, unless you plan to ship goods, but it may help.
How about posting a photo of some of the young cooks?
Another reward could be a photo album, video, or articles emailed to backers that chronicles the progress of the project.
