They are thinking of exploiting reddit in a way. Actually, their tips should start with how project creators can contribute to the reddit communities. Sometimes, your product is so inherently interesting that just publicising it to a subreddit is good enough.

I have got success on Reddit in the past. Some of my blog posts related to the travel niche had fetched 10k to 30k uniques from Reddit.

I like the idea of spending a small budget to promote stuff on Reddit, it is worth it.
