Well, I would get feedback from others, but personally I tend to back projects that have a cool product or unique art piece that I want (which I get at a certain reward tier). I don't usually back projects as a "supporter" unless the overall mission behind the project is really in-line with my beliefs (like bringing computer programming to schools) or unless I know the perosn.
