Life's hilarious, why should undeath be any different?

    by SarahinSF » Mon Nov 03, 2014 5:17 am

    Hello all!

Thanks for the invitation to join the forums and introduce myself. I'm Sarah Roark. I'm a violinist turned author and comic creator, and my latest project is After Daylight, Volume 1 -- a 100+ page graphic novel that comprises the first "season" of my long-running vampire-comedy webcomic.

This is a series that sprang out of the question, "what’s it like for your average, workanight vampire on the street when tech-savvy humans start catching wise to the existence of the supernatural?" After Daylight takes the urban-fantasy premise of “vampires out of the coffin” and gives it a snarky (but not heartless!), socially-aware twist — both homage to and send-up of the genre. Vol 1 is complete and free to read on the Web at http://www.afterdaylight.com (at web resolution/size), and the KS in progress is in order to fund the full-size deluxe softcover and PDF edition.

AD is "an awesome, sassy vampire webcomic" (Meg Markey, ReadComicBooks.net) that "shows surprising depth quickly" (Chuck Wendig, terribleminds.com). It's a Kickstarter staff pick in Comics, and was a top-featured in Comics during its first week. We're now halfway through the campaign, so we could use any help you kind folk could spare making that final push!

Again, thanks for the welcome! Wishing everyone a very happy Day of the Dead ;-), and a beautiful fall to come!

Congrats on raising 3.7k so far! Seems like you are trending towards your goal if you maintain your current progress. Is this your first Kickstarter?

Yes it is, my very first! :-) So thanks for the kind words! I am promoting and burning out that virtual shoe leather as hard as I can.

I'm fortunate in that since Kickstarter is now becoming a big part of the indie comic creator's business model, I at least have a lot of prior campaigns to study, and I did study them quite a bit before launching. But as you know, studying is one thing, the reality is quite another! A very exhausting reality, to be frank -- but it'll all be worth it if I can make goal!

I'd be delighted to hear from any other comic/graphic novel creators on the forum.

Looks like a fantastic comic and a great campaign. Hope you'll stick around and give the rest of us some advice when you're done! I look forward to seeing how far over $5800 you go!

    PS I loved:
"Immortality! If by "immortality" you're willing to take "a thank-you by name in the historic first edition!"

Thanks so much! You don't know how encouraging that is to hear right now, as I scrabble to get traction to pull me out of the infamous middle-weeks slump... (IIRC the statistics are supposed to be comforting, what is it - 90% of all KSes that get to 30% fund completely, something like 95% if they hit 50%...but a neurotic artist's brain only sort of listens to statistics!)

Yes, I will definitely stick around. I've already made some process posts about the Kickstarter prep and planning over at my site (afterdaylight.com) that anyone here is welcome to browse, and I will probably make at least one if not a couple grand post-mortem posts. So I'll definitely be back to share those and any additional insights I have to offer! (And hopefully to encourage somebody else who needs cheering up out of their middle-week slump...)

    :-)
