Hello all, new to this kind of thing...

    by jujinky » Mon Jul 08, 2013 1:06 am

Hello. I'm James Hoey, a photographer in Sun Prairie, WI. I've recently begun to look for ways to do more for the homeless in my area beyond food pantry help and holiday handouts. I came up with a project, On The Turning Away, and turned to Kickstarter.

I spend a great deal of time on the streets. Street photography is my true passion. While other forms of photography pay the bills, nothing is more exciting than watching all of the little moments of life unfold, and then be able to capture some of them in an image. It's spontaneous, constantly surprising, and at times a little disheartening. Because I spend so much time walking around I run into homeless folks regularly. Some of them are 'regulars' in some areas, others are passing through. In all cases, offering a meal and conversation here and there just never felt like enough.

So, the project. Not going great so far, but I'm ever the optimist and I'm hoping that it will pick up. I really want to do this to open the eyes of people to this problem, and hopefully use the end product to generate some help in the form of donations or expansion of services in areas.

I would be extremely grateful if anyone viewing this would have a look at the project, and even more grateful if you could help to pass it on to those who might back it. I don't want the "one man can't fight a war" notion to be the thing that brings me down. I may not be able to fight the war, but I sure can do my part.

    Cheers,

    Jim Hoey
