I have for promoting products and services. It really varies on the effectiveness. Essentially you are paying for keyword terms and eyeballs. Some keywords have a lot of competition, so the prices are higher than other terms. The prices can also go up over time, making advertising affordable in the short run, but not the long run sometimes.
My main goal when using google ads is to figure out as quickly as possible the cost of acquisition of a new customer and figure out whether or not that cost makes sense to keep advertising.
Example:
$100 - 1 customer = $150 in revenue and $50 in profit doesn't make sense.
$100 - 1 customer = $300 in revenue and $100 in profit is okay. You could pocket that or re-invest it.
$100 - 1 customer = $500 in revenue and $300 in profit is ideal because then you can re-invest the $200 to get more customers and also pocket $100.
