I've been on both sides of the coin - one of the projects I worked on passed the Funded Today vetting process, while the other didn't. It's nice when it passes, but an incredible money-sink when it doesn't. From what I know, Funded Today just runs ads for your project against saved audiences from every single related campaign they've run before. If one of the saved audiences "work" (aka produces a reasonable ROI), then they'll continue working on your campaign. Since they mostly run hardware campaigns, it's a tough one for people crowdfunding in other verticals.
